Abstract
Sanskrit, recognized as the language of classical Indian knowledge systems, holds immense significance in Ayurveda. Ayurvedic texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam are composed in Sanskrit, reflecting precise terminology and rich linguistic depth. Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine originating in ancient India, extensively utilizes Sanskrit for documentation and dissemination of its core knowledge. Sanskrit provides a precise linguistic medium to communicate complex medical and philosophical principles inherent in Ayurvedic science. Although Ayurveda has gained global acceptance, limited research systematically investigates the role of Sanskrit in the accuracy, preservation, and modern clinical application of Ayurvedic teachings. This review aims to address this gap by critically evaluating how Sanskrit impacts Ayurveda's theoretical and practical dimensions. The use of Sanskrit ensures clarity in medical concepts, therapeutic formulations, and diagnostic procedures. Key Ayurvedic concepts such as Prakriti, Vikriti, Agni, Ojas, and Dosha have deep philosophical meanings that are better conveyed through Sanskrit. The language’s structured grammar enables detailed descriptions of herbs, treatments, and preventive healthcare strategies. The precision of Sanskrit terms minimizes ambiguity in the interpretation of medical concepts, ensuring consistency in knowledge transmission. Furthermore, Sanskrit's emphasis on phonetics has facilitated the memorization and oral transmission of extensive Ayurvedic knowledge across generations. Modern Ayurveda scholars emphasize the importance of understanding Sanskrit to accurately interpret classical texts, ensuring the application of authentic knowledge in clinical practice. Integrating Sanskrit study into Ayurvedic education continues to empower practitioners with comprehensive insights into holistic healthcare practices.

Introduction
Essential Ayurvedic concepts such as Prakriti (constitution), Vikriti (imbalance), Agni (digestive fire), Ojas (vital essence), and Dosha (fundamental biological energies: Vata, Pitta, Kapha) carry nuanced meanings that are uniquely preserved and articulated through Sanskrit. These terms encompass not just physiological states but profound philosophical interpretations that shape holistic healing approaches. The structured grammatical framework of Sanskrit enables detailed, systematic descriptions of medicinal herbs, therapeutic preparations, surgical procedures, and preventive health measures. The inherent precision and unambiguous nature of Sanskrit terms significantly reduce misunderstandings, ensuring accurate interpretation and uniformity in the dissemination of Ayurvedic knowledge. Moreover, Sanskrit's phonetic rigor aids in precise oral recitation, ensuring the reliable preservation and transmission of intricate Ayurvedic teachings across generations.
In contemporary times, Ayurveda scholars and practitioners emphasize mastering Sanskrit to accurately interpret original texts, ensuring that clinical practices remain faithful to authentic principles. The integration of Sanskrit into modern Ayurvedic curricula enriches practitioners' comprehension, allowing them to apply deeper, more comprehensive insights into preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic practices within Ayurveda. Consequently, Sanskrit remains a vital tool, safeguarding the integrity and continuity of Ayurvedic wisdom for future generations.
Methods:
This comprehensive review employed a systematic literature search strategy. Classical Ayurvedic texts (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridayam) and modern publications (journal articles, books, theses, and online resources) published between 1990 and 2023 were analyzed. Databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, and Ayurveda-specific repositories were searched using terms such as “Sanskrit,” “Ayurveda literature,” “Ayurvedic texts,” “Charaka Samhita,” and “Ayurveda education.” Inclusion criteria focused on sources explicitly discussing Sanskrit’s linguistic role and its impact on Ayurveda literature.
Results:
The review identified four major themes:
1. Precision and Clarity of Sanskrit Terminology
Sanskrit terms such as Dosha, Prakriti, Vikriti, Agni, and Ojas precisely encapsulate complex physiological and philosophical concepts. This precision ensures clarity and minimizes interpretational discrepancies.
2. Structured Grammar and Knowledge Transmission
Sanskrit's systematic grammatical structure allows detailed, unambiguous descriptions of herbs, treatments, and procedures. Its phonetic clarity supports accurate oral transmission, preserving textual integrity through centuries.
3. Philosophical Depth and Conceptual Integration
Sanskrit terminology inherently integrates philosophical depth, connecting Ayurvedic medicine to broader spiritual and ethical paradigms. Concepts like Satva (mind), Atma (soul), and Prana (life force) illustrate Ayurveda’s holistic perspective, deeply rooted in Sanskrit literature.
4. Educational and Clinical Significance
Mastery of Sanskrit among contemporary Ayurveda scholars significantly enhances their comprehension and clinical application of Ayurvedic principles. Sanskrit education in Ayurvedic curricula fosters better interpretation, authentic application, and innovation in clinical practices.
Discussion
Sanskrit language profoundly impacts Ayurveda by maintaining the accuracy, consistency, and philosophical integrity of its knowledge system. The structured grammar and precise terminology prevent misinterpretation, supporting reliable clinical and therapeutic outcomes. However, limitations exist, including a decreasing number of Sanskrit-literate practitioners and limited Sanskrit resources tailored for modern learners, hindering broader engagement with primary Ayurvedic texts. Future research should address these gaps, exploring innovative teaching methodologies to integrate Sanskrit effectively within contemporary Ayurvedic education.
Conclusion
Sanskrit language is integral to Ayurveda literature, significantly shaping its theoretical foundations and practical applications. Ensuring continued Sanskrit literacy among Ayurvedic practitioners is crucial for preserving the authenticity and effectiveness of Ayurveda as a globally relevant healthcare system. Further interdisciplinary research and educational innovations are recommended to enhance Sanskrit literacy, promoting accurate and meaningful application of Ayurveda's ancient wisdom.
